Seasonal Afffective Disorder, do you suffer from it??
Question: It's been suggested to me that I may have it. Have looked at the sada website & the symptoms are like a checklist of my life. Do G.P's take it seriously & how easy/difficult is it to manage?
Answers: I dont think its taken very seriously and I think many people have a touch of it, including my husband and i used to have it but much milder than my hubby.Supposedly the further north in the northern hemisphere you are, the more likely you are to suffer from from it.
I know light boxes are used to treat the condition. I've also found just three minutes on a sunbed when you feeling depressed can help (although please ensure its only around 3 minutes every couple of weeks).
What I've found really helps is if you try to slow down and appreciate the change in the year. Change the foods you are eating with the seasons and notice all the changes in the year. It can help trying to work with the change in the year and shorter days rather than figting against it. Sleep much earlier and get up earlier. It really has made a huge difference to me.
everyone has SAD, when its cold, wet and dark we are all much more miserable than in the summer when its hot and sunny.
I don't believe its a real illness, its just something that happens to us all
5htp - hydroxytryptophan - an amino acid which will increase the serotonin levels in the brain and help you to cope during the winter period.
I never use to believe in it however since these dark miserable days.I have been feeling down fighting like mad to cheer up.
Yes, I find summers depressing
Some GPS and shrinks do take it seriously and there's a few thing you can do for it. Some GPS will medicate you with a SSRI if you have severe periods of depression, but most often they will recommend light therapy (light boxes etc), taking melatonin and omega 3 supplements and walking at dawn and sunset. I have SADS factors as part of bipolar disorder 2 and get bad with the turn of seasons and during periods of stormy weather when there is not much exposure to sun in winter.
See S.A.D., at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris on page 2; read the section. GPs vary, but, with around 2% of depression sufferers committing suicide, should take it very seriously indeed! I take a teaspoon of cod liver oil daily (except in the warmer months) as advised by Dr. Mercola, at www.mercola.com You may need 2 tsps, or 4 capsules (nasty tasting oil!).
