More information about RX drug Provigil??
Question: I am taking this drug and have found it to be very expensive and most insurance policies wont cover it. I know the Provigil website offers an assistance program. Anyone have any further info? Know any alternatives to this drug?
Answers: Most insurance (other than medicaid) won't cover Provigil when it is prescribed for an off label use as is often the case when it used to treat the fatigue associated with depression. Provigil is only covered by insurance when it is prescribed for narcolepsy or sleep shift work disorder.
If you're taking the 100mg dose, you could ask your doc to write you a Rx for the 200mg dose and split it, thereby getting 2 months for the cost of one month as I believe the price may be the same. This works with most drugs. Also your doc can try and help you out with samples to defray the cost. It is extremely expensive out of pocket.
It looks like they will not be able to produce a generic form of this medication until 2012. The best thing that I can think of is for you to ask your doctor to draft a letter regarding why this medication is medically necessary to your condition and appeal to your insurance company. It doesn't always work, but there are cases where when something is medically necessary for a specific condition where an insurance company will reconsider.
I am also taking this medication and it is very expensive. My doctor gave me a bunch of samples of this medication due to the cost. I suggest that you talk to your doctor about samples, I'm sure that he/she has some because they come from the pharmaceutical companies.
