How to go from a RN to a MD??
Question: What are the steps I'd need to take if I am an RN, but want to go for a MD, or Asst. Ph.D? I am confused, I want to work my way up to it, but I dont know where to go from here, can someone help me? Is there a website that can help me better understand the steps I need to take to get from a RN tto a MD or Asst. Ph.D?
Answers: For an MD:
1. Need to get into medical school
-Need to take MCATS
-go through admissions process
2. Go to the normal 4 years of med school
3. Couple years of residency
For Physicians Assistant
1. Need to contact a college with a PA program and determine what classes you need to take to get a PA. This will vary school to school based on your original RN program (Assuming your RN was a 4 year degree). Contact a school that has a PA program.
If you want the MD basically you follow the same steps as a pre-med student. You have probably taken a lot of the science classes which are usually oranic chem I and II , inorganic chem I and II, Physics I and II etc etc . But the best thing to check is med school websites and they will list their requirements.
YOu can get a Masters Degree in Nursing and work as a Advanced Registered Nurse Practicioner (ARNP), or as a Physcian's Assistant (PA), or you could get a doctorate degree in nursing. But to go from being a RN to a MD is a whole different career path. YOu have to start off doing pre-med to meet all your requisites, then go through med school and residency. I know a nurse who did it. but it is a LOT of work......basically starting all over.
in my university, if you are a nurse you can automatically apply for the MD course and be accepted (but you have to begin from the very beginning)
people who do this are usually those who did not obtain the grades they needed to be accepted in the MD course, so they first did 4 yrs in nursing then entered medicine. a bit of a hassle, but at least they could follow their dream!
check with your uni if it is possible also there!!
