Eye Exam on Strong Meds??
Question: I am having a foot surgery Tuesday I will be on Percocet for the pain (a strong medication) This thursday I have an eye exam for both contacts and glasses. Will the medication affect my vision?
Answers: tell the doctor. you shouldn't be running around 2 days after the surgery anyway. I'd reschedule your eye appointment.
yes most likely it will considering medications effect people differently you would be wise to reschedule the appt. the wrong prescription could cause more damage in the long run.
You will find that the foot surgery may not be all that painful. But then again, ortho stuff hurts enough to take those meds. Keep yourself ahead of the pain curve. Use or ask your doc if you can use ibuprofen as part of pain management. By keeping your blood levels elevated to therapeutic range, you'll keep the inflammation from the injury and surgery to a minimum and not need that much Percocet. If you think you are going to have nausea, ask your doc to Rx Vistaril 25 mg along with the pain Rx. Take the Vistaril about 30 minutes before the pain Rx and you'll keep from getting sick to your stomach which just doesn't help when your foot is hurting TOO!.
The movement after surgery as the other answerer stated may not be a good idea. It's better to rest after those surgeries and allow the wounds to settle down. You should probably reschedule the eye appointment. But if it's almost impossible to get one and you sort of have to go anyway, the pain Rx will not really affect your refraction.
Most eye docs will want your eyes to be relaxed when you are getting your refraction. They'll even over plus you at the end to make sure you aren't accomodating or trying to focus which would make your new Rx too strong the wrong way. Optometrists are well aware of this and will give you your best refraction (my opinion).
But most ophthalmologists that DO glasses get pretty good at it after awhile. Still the meds will just make you enjoy the exam all the more. But, if you are more focused on your foot than the better of A or B or 1 or 2 or 1 or 3, you should come back and have it checked on another day.
