I am having an IUD placed. They said I have to have it done on my period. Why.???

Question: I checked the Paragard website and it doesn't say anything about having to have your period. I am just concerned that I made the appt too early and I wont have it.
Answers: Some IUD's can disrupt an early pregnancy, so they tell people to have it done during or right after their period so that they KNOW that you are not pregnant when they put it in. It depends on your doc, but some will put it in anyways as long as you have a negative pregnancy test the day they put it in.
IUD are inserted just after periods because the doctor is sure that there is no early pregnancy
Your cervix tends to be a bit softer and slightly opened during your period. That will make inserting the IUD a bit easier on you. If you don't have your period, you can still have the IUD put in.
If you are having your period, the doctor can be fairly certain that you are not pregnant; he/she may still do a pregnancy blood test, although my doctor did not.
