How often to pap smear results come back abnormal??

Question: I found out mine did, and I need a Colposcopy now. Just wondering how often they come back abnormal - if anyone can give statistics or a percentage or a website with some, that would be really helpful. Serious answers only, please - I don't know how worried I should be.
Answers: That totally depends on the levels. They could come back abnormal for years. If the levels are not elevated to a red flag your Doctor may suggest you just keep a close watch on this by getting tested every 3 to six months. If Your Doctor is very concerned she will do a biopsy on your cervix and additional test. Do not panic. Ask all the questions you need so you feel comfortable. Make certain you have all the test done not just a pap and blood work. Request this from your doctor. I had cervical cancer that spread to my uterus 2 years ago. My paps where coming out abnormal after I gave birth to my second son in 1988. Just make certain you get tested every 3 to six months. You need to be monitored for future problems.
Good Luck and God Bless you.
Since we've become so much more aware of HPV lately, abnormal pap's and the need for a colposcopy have happened a lot more. Don't panic, though - if you DO have HPV, you're not alone - over 80% of women will be diagnosed with it before the age of 50. For more information, here's an article I wrote about the subject a few months ago:

The article was actually inspired by ME finding out that I had HPV, and going into a crazy panic. Turns out I had no reason to be worried - the colposcopy showed that I was fine. :) Hope this helps!
That is hard to say because it depends on the person. I've had about 10 pap smears and I had one come back abnormal, all I had to do was take some multivitamins and my next pap came back normal. I would definitely get a second opinion before you have that procedure done!!
Don't be worried. They come back abnormal VERY often.

Odds are, they'll do another test and you'll be fine.
About 5% are abnormal.... but keep in mind that a colposcopy can come back normal... im a trained cytology screener, so i can look at paps all day (although i chose a different path) so you may not need further tests done after this, if it is serious, you may need to have a cone biopsy which i must warn can be quite painful.
